Postira is a picturesque fishery village and one of Brac’s ports, named after Latin word pastura- pasture, because of the fertile land in hinterland.
Postira was first mentioned in 1347. It was founded in 16th century by the settlers Doljani, i.e. By emigrated Poljicani. Good geographical position and spring water enabled a rapid development of this area.
Postira is famous for its sandy bay full of ruins and ancient findings. Vladimir Nazor (1876-1949) was born there, one of the greatest Croatian poets. Postira, besides clear blue sea, beaches and small stone houses, also offer delicious local food prepared from fresh fish and reared on pastures.
Traditional cultural and entertainment event Postirsko ljeto includes among others the feasts of St John the Baptist, the parish patron saint (24 June), Our Lady of Mount Carmel (July 16) and Assumption (August 15).
